"Dartmoor Homestead"

Dartmoor Homestead (Circa 1880) is a truly magnificent property. Set on 3 acres, just 1 km from Naracoorte town centre, this gracious and historical property, built in four stages between 1842 and 1890, has now been extensively renovated, to provide a unique Bed and Breakfast experience, but still retains all of its old character. These are some of the oldest stone buildings in the State’s southeast and the man who built them played a key role in the opening up of much of the area around Naracoorte. They were built by George Ormerod who came from the Lakes District in England in 1840. Initially, Ormerod lived in a reed hut on the banks of the Naracoorte Creek but later built the first stone settlers cottage to house his new wife and family. Eventually it was to become the bakery for the early villagers of Naracoorte. Further additions were made, including what is now known as “The Bachelors Hall” which, it is believed, was used to house the single stockman. Dartmoor was later sold to prominent pastoralist Thomas Margarey who built the main spacious homestead around 1882.

The homestead consists of 3 suites, which share a superlative heritage sitting room, with an open marble fireplace, antiques, gilt mirror, richly furnished with French Fabrics.

Artemis and Venus rooms have been adorned with beautiful four-poster beds and Apollo room has its own unique Roman flavor. Apollo is regally adorned in black and gold, with warmth stemming from the turned wood of the “Poetry Bed”. It blends an executive, masculine flair with romance.

Artemis which is the main bedroom is lavished with passionate red roses embroidered on top of crisp white linen. This romantic space is comfortably designed with a King-sized bed, a Chesterfield lounge and an unobtrusive ensuite. This room is a slice of Heaven for those who seriously want to escape and indulge.

The third bedroom Venus, also encapsulates the romance of a rose in bloom. As the western afternoon sun streams through the window, the room magically transforms into a luxurious retreat from the world.

All the rooms feature high ceilings and the front door boasts a superb leadlight surround.

There is also a circa 1842 cottage that has been restored to reveal its original charm and character. This enchanting self contained cottage includes a bedroom and comfy living room, with a cozy fireplace; which will ensure that your stay is memorable. Come and experience a magical step back in time and curl up in front of the fire with your favorite person, book, beverage…..or all three!

The grounds are in a peaceful cul-de-sac and are perfect for an English afternoon tea, while listening to the warbling magpies and kookaburras. Take a stroll down to the creek or enjoy a drink before dinner. Come and discover the superb hospitality and unique style and charm that Dartmoor and the surrounding areas of Naracoorte have to offer.

Whether you’re travelling the Great Ocean Road, or doing the Grampians between Adelaide and Melbourne, or just want to visit the wineries of Coonarawarra and Padthaway or the world heritage listed Naracoorte Caves, Dartmoor Homestead offers Superior Accommodation for you to indulge in.
